Turning Account Governance into Value Conversations

Monthly customer governance meetings were becoming dominated by invoice reconciliation, hours consumed and remaining budgets.

These examples describe my approach and contributions alongside the work of wider teams.

The challenge

Monthly customer governance meetings were becoming dominated by invoice reconciliation, hours consumed and remaining budgets.

Although these discussions were necessary, they left limited time for strategic conversations about business value, customer priorities and future plans.

My approach

I created a shared Account Tracker to bring financial and delivery information together.

The tracker consolidated:

  • Customer budgets.

  • Invoices.

  • Planned versus actual hours.

  • Utilisation.

  • Monthly spend forecasts.

  • Remaining budget and project runway.

  • Utilisation variances and their potential impact on future billing.

I ensured information was shared before governance meetings so that both sides could review the numbers in advance.

This created more room for discussions about delivery progress, priorities, risks and business value.

The outcome

  • Improved financial transparency.

  • Better visibility into remaining budgets and future spend.

  • Reduced billing friction.

  • More informed conversations about priorities and next steps.

  • A shift from invoice reconciliation towards value and outcomes.

Key takeaway

Good governance should give customers clarity about their investment and confidence about what happens next.
