Transforming the Enterprise Sales Conversation

Enterprise technology conversations can quickly become transactional.

These examples describe my approach and contributions alongside the work of wider teams.

The challenge

Enterprise technology conversations can quickly become transactional.

Customers compare vendors, request estimates and evaluate proposals before the underlying business problem has been fully understood.

This can lead to lengthy sales cycles, unclear requirements and proposals that don’t adequately reflect the customer’s priorities.

My approach

I changed the emphasis from selling a technology solution to understanding the business problem.

Before the first conversation, I researched the organisation, its industry and relevant stakeholders.

During discussions, I focused on understanding the business challenge, desired outcomes and operational context.

For early-stage businesses, I introduced preliminary estimates to help establish whether an engagement was financially realistic.

I also worked with technical teams to validate assumptions and identify alternatives, including existing off-the-shelf solutions, when custom development was not the best fit.

The intention was to establish credibility early and help customers make informed decisions.

The outcome

  • Typical enterprise sales cycles reduced from approximately three months to four to six weeks.

  • Meaningful commercial discussions could take place in as few as four meetings.

  • Better qualification and clearer expectations.

  • Conversations shifted from vendor comparisons towards business problems and potential solutions.

Key takeaway

The best sales conversation doesn’t begin with what we can build. It begins with understanding what the customer needs to achieve.
